Campaign Groups and Responsible Dog Ownership information

THE STAFFY CAMPAIGN
For sometime now UK animal rescue and welfare organisations have been concerned and distressed about the prolific numbers of Staffordshire Bull Terriers being bred and found waiting in pounds to be rehomed or be euthanised because supply has outstripped demand. In many cases, these usually ‘people friendly’ dogs, are being overbred by unregistered breeders and then homed to people that either have them for the wrong reasons or haven’t thought through properly what the responsibilities of dog ownership are. UK rescue groups, animal welfare organisations and celebrities have now joined together to organise a national campaign to persuade the government and owners of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, to put measures in place to stem the indiscriminate breeding of these unfortunate creatures and to encourage owners to neuter and spay their pets. This website is available for people to pledge their support, become informed regarding this emotive problem and hopefully find workable solutions that may save lives.
DDA WATCH
DDAWatch is a new initiative from the Pet Owners Parliament set up to help monitor "dangerous dog" legislation, to educate and assist those affected by it, while campaigning to find fair, workable solutions that can better protect the public without compromising the lives and welfare of countless dogs who have never acted dangerously.
SAVING BRUCE
Campaign film channel speaking up for Bruce, an innocent Staffordshire Bull Terrier incarcerated under the Dangerous Dog Act and Breed Specific Legislation in Northern Ireland. Please view this channel, leave a comment and share the link with everyone you know. The global campaign to save Bruce will impact other cases where innocent dogs have been removed from their families and impounded for nothing more than 'looking like' a banned breed, a pit bull. When a law is clearly wrong, it must be put right. BSL must end in order to protect innocent dogs from destruction.

Animal Rescue Organisations UK

DORIS BANHAM DOG SANCTUARY
Doris Banham was a dedicated animal lover throughout her life who sadly died in November 2001. The following year in June 2002 her daughter, Trudie James, decided to honour her life and dedication to animals by establishing The Doris Banham Sanctuary. The charity was set up to help all animals, but as we became increasingly aware of the heart breaking needless destruction of unclaimed dogs in dog pounds, we vowed to help them and the charity has developed to provide an essential life saving rescue service for these forgotten dogs. We are a non-profit organisation and rely totally on fundraising and donations to save these animals.
MUTTS IN DISTRESS
Mutts in Distress is an animal shelter located at Normandale Kennels, in Little Hallingbury on the Herts/Essex border, UK. We rescue dogs from local pounds that would otherwise be destroyed, and offer them for rehoming.

NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK ANIMAL TRUST
The kennels in Fremantle Road were originally the Police pound for stray dogs. In 1979 two sisters, Muriel and Iris Castle, who had been joint secretaries of the RSPCA in Great Yarmouth, together with people of like minds, approached the police with a view to taking over the running of the pound. This was agreed and initially a great deal of time was spent raising money to refurbish the kennels, and subsequently, mainly through legacies, we were able to purchase the kennels and bring them up to a more satisfactory condition. In 1986 the Norfolk and Suffolk Animal Trust Deed was signed by Nellie Jordan, Daphne Brady, Lilian Carver and Shirley Welch. The purpose of the trust was “for the care and protection of animals, reptiles, birds and fish that are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, neglect or poor circumstances”.
RESCUE REMEDIES

HYNDBURN STRAY DOGS IN NEED
Dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of stray dogs in the area. HSDIN has come to the aid of over 4600 strays since the charity began in 2001. We rely on the generosity of the public to help us in our efforts to give these stray dogs a second chance, and find them their forever home.
THE BULL BREED CRISIS 2009
There is currently a crisis in rescues involving Bull Terriers and bull breed types. Please take a moment to read about this and help us educate people about these dogs and their fate. Following recent events and the tragic loss of a young child's life attributed to a Pit Bull Terrier type, a knee-jerk reaction has led to Bull Terriers and their crosses being targeted, with numbers being abandoned on the streets or handed into pounds by owners who are fearful of the backlash they have received or expect to receive from members of the public. Many are signing dogs over purely because of misinformation and confusion about what constitutes a dog meeting the "Dangerous Dogs" criteria. Loving family pets who have never given cause for concern are being given up by owners confused by the law and fearful of prosecution, not realising that their dogs are NOT on the DDA's list of banned breeds. ONCE LOVED RESCUE
Helping abandoned dogs to find permanent loving homes. Once Loved Dog Rescue was set up to help provide care, shelter and permanent homes for unwanted and abandoned dogs. Our work is mainly rescuing and rehoming ex pound dogs. We are run entirely voluntarily. The areas we cover are primarily Devon and Somerset. The rescue is based in Sidmouth, Devon, between Exeter and Honiton. As we are a small rescue, we like to keep homes as local as possible for home checking purposes. We will, however, consider rehoming to other areas.
ALL DOGS MATTER
We are a voluntary rescue based in London. We rescue and rehome dogs who are abandoned or in need of a new home because their owners can no longer keep them. When new dogs come to us, we assess them and put them into experienced foster homes. All our dogs are veterinary checked, vaccinated, neutered/spayed, microchipped, de-flead and wormed prior to rehoming. Because of limited funds, we only carry out basic health checks - for example we do no x-ray for joint conditions. However we will not, to the best of our knowledge, rehome a sick or unhealthy dog.

Petitions to sign and share

MICROCHIPPING CAMPAIGN
Recent reports state that over 100,000 strays were collected in 2007. All of these had to be cared for by local councils or charitable organisations, and too many were destroyed. If these dogs had been microchipped, the owners could easily be traced and any cruelty, punished. A dynamic school animal action club, called Speak Out for Animals (S.O.F.A) is therefore campaigning for microchipping of dogs to be made law.
ANIMAL PROTECTION EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK LAW
Petition speaking up for animal protection laws to be strengthened Europe-wide.
RESCUING THE RESCUER'S
Animals in Need are a rescue organisation offering sanctuary to many abandoned animals each year. A registered charity, they have operated in Liverpool U.K for 18 years. Now the rescuers need rescuing. With a strict spay/neuter policy for all their own animals they also spend a great deal of time and finance working with dogs and their owners within the community offering free neutering, chipping and training to those in need. As a result they have prevented the birth of hundred or even thousands of unwanted dogs. During the "pit bull amnesty" of 2007 they offered free help and advice to owners caught up in the Dangerous Dogs Act ( DDA) 1991. To this day they still do all the above. However at the end of 2007 the DDA turned to the rescuers as two of their dogs were accused of being pit bull type. Then, in January 2008 a young dog was left abandoned and, being a law abiding rescue they notified the authorities. Animals In Need were then taken to court under 4b of the DDA for three counts of possessing a banned breed. The rescue refused to accept the first two dogs were "of type" and funded a legal team and experts to defend the dogs. They won and both dogs were deemed to be legal cross breeds and rehomed. The rescue agreed with the authorities on the type of the third dog however having a strict non destruction policy they funded experts and a legal team to ask the courts to register the dog to Animals In Need. This was allowed and the dogs life was spared. She will live out her life under the care of Animals in Need who are the ONLY rescue within the UK to currently own an exempted dog. However the nightmare was not over and at the end of 2008 the DDA struck again and a further dog was accused of being a banned breed. Unlike the previous three dogs this one was seized and removed to secure kennels pending court proceedings. Animals in Need founder, Fran Ellis is now facing another charge of possessing an illegal breed and with penalties that could include up to 6 months in prison, a large fine and a criminal record. Please help support Animals in Need by signing the petition.
